On Sunday, Dec. 8, federal lawmakers unveiled the “Lower Health Care Costs Act of 2019” (LHCCA). The bill aims to tackle some of the issues facing the American healthcare system, most notably “surprise billing.” Surprise billing happens when a patient receives treatment at a hospital covered by their insurance, but part, or all, of the care is carried out by an out-of-network provider contracted with the hospital. Fair Chance Act offers opportunity for ex-offenders

The Fair Chance Act has passed in the House as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act. The bill codifies President Obama’s 2015 “ban the box” rule, which removed the criminal history question from job applications. The Fair Chance Act would apply to job applications in the executive, judicial, and legislative branches of federal government and extend to individual contractors working on government grants within private companies. Last month, the Fraser Institute released its Economic Freedom of North America 2019 report. This year's report is the 15th edition of the Fraser Institute rankings. The Fraser Institute's report utilizes 2017 data - the latest year for which all comprehensive information is available. The rankings use 10 variables across 3 major areas: government spending, taxes, and labor market freedom. Together, these variables provide each state with an index score and ranking.
